We work with architects and interior designers to provide compelling interactive experiences. We focus on permanent over event based installations. We make sure we can look after each work for 10 years after installation. The best interactive works are physically and visually seamlessly integrated with their surrounding environments. As such, ideally we like to be involved from the planning phase.
Hotel Kanra, a boutique hotel near Kyoto station, was one of our first commissions. The theme of the hotel was "machiya", a type of traditional home in Kyoto, where you walk through the gates into an inner garden before entering the home. These homes also tend to be long and narrow.
Following the machiya narrative we installed lighting in the hotel which changes with the seasons. Momiji in the fall, cherry blossoms in the spring and so on. The pattern of lights is not simply a few colors nor static, but a constantly shifting myriad. In the evenings "light" rain falls in the space and as it lifts we shift into a softer evening mode.
There are 12 sensors hidden throughout the space. Using these we are aware of how people move through the space and ambient sound levels. Using this data we make the space seem alive; when you walk through the entrance the colors shift to greet you, as your dinner conversation enlivens the colors become richer; subtle shifts which accent and compliment what is happening without interferring. Thus we have cultivated a "live" garden for guests to enjoy before retiring to their rooms.
D-Labo (a brand of Suruga Bank branches) at T-Site (Shonan) is another good example where we joined forces with the architects from the start and created a visually seamlesss experience.
The logo of the bank, as well as other elements of the space, were circular so we started by proposing a 2 meter circular screen hidden behind dark glass. D-Labo's copy phrase is "draw my dream" so we suggested guests draw their dreams on spintops, and play with them interactively with gestures on the large display.
We installed a small circular touch panel, also integrated into the glass wall. For gestures we use the Kinect 2. Finally we added a 4 channel audio system to provide the sense of sound moving through the space, spinning with your spintop. The installation has been a hit with kids with over 20,000 drawings in the first year.
